Meet Jennifer Stephens, an OPEN Health Scientific Trailblazer

Written on Thursday, May 23, 2024

Jenny Stephens has been at the forefront of international health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) for more than 20 years, working to improve patients’ access to innovative, safe, and efficacious therapies. She joined OPEN Health in 2019 when Pharmerit, the consultancy she co-founded and ran as managing partner, merged with the company. One common theme across her career has been her interest in promoting and advancing HEOR science. Jenny recognized a gap in stakeholders’ knowledge of what HEOR is and what it can do. Filling this gap has taken her all over the globe as she has offered HEOR training to clients, physicians, pharmacists, and payers.

Jenny’s interest in educating pharmacy students about HEOR has led her to be an active alumna both for her undergraduate institution, West Virginia University, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where she obtained her PharmD. At both universities, she serves as a mentor to students, providing guidance, delivering class lectures, and highlighting job opportunities. Jenny stands as a role model for pharmacy students who choose non-traditional pharmacy careers such as her own, and she has established two scholarship funds at MUSC to support those students.

Jenny’s contributions as an MUSC alumna were recognized in 2024, when she was honored with the university’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

A true scientist, Jenny has seen her work published in a number of leading journals, such as PharmacoEconomics, Value in Health and the European Journal of Health Economics. She is also a coauthor of a poster recently presented by her colleague Grace Fox at this year’s ISPOR US conference, titled Clinical and Economic Value of a Biosimilar Portfolio to Stakeholders: A Conceptual Framework.

“My greatest contribution to the HEOR discipline is in training and mentoring pharmacy students, interns, and new graduates starting their careers in HEOR, many of whom now have positions across the industry,” she says.

Jenny’s years of dedication to HEOR science and her work shaping and mentoring students make her a Scientific Trailblazer at OPEN Health.
