Harnessing AI to develop an SLR program

Written on Friday, September 5, 2025

Challenge

Literature reviews are a critical element of clients’ internal planning processes and play a central role in the development of HTA and reimbursement dossiers. However, the combination of stringent quality requirements, an ever-growing body of evidence, and the need for regular updates makes producing these reviews both time-consuming and costly. The upcoming implementation of the EU JCA process is expected to further increase the time, effort, and resources required for systematic literature review (SLR) production. This program aims to address these challenges by improving efficiency and reducing costs while maintaining the high-quality standards expected in SLR development.

Solution

To enable a more efficient, standardized, and scalable approach to literature reviews, OPEN Health:

  • Established a client-focused governance committee to guide the program
  • Developed procedures for workstreams, depending on literature review type (eg, HTA-level systematic review, targeted review, or rapid review)
  • Developed templates and other procedures for establishing standards and expectations by project type
  • Included routine workshops in the use of automation/AI in literature reviews and with respect to HTA/JCA requirements
  • Developed and continue to refine an AI-driven application housing sources for literature reviews that allows users to submit queries and aggregate information across projects

Outcome

  • Total of 16 projects completed or ongoing over the past 16 months
  • Have held three workshops with our client (including at ISPOR Europe 2024)
  • Won a 2024 award for innovative approaches with our client team
  • Cost avoidance (i.e. discount + other efficiencies) has reached 15-20%
  • Opportunity to expand out the program to TLR or rapid reviews for Medical Affairs teams
