OPEN-ing doors to your future career

I can’t believe how fast time flies! I joined the OPEN Health graduate scheme as part of the 2018 intake. 10 months later and I am over half way through, having conquered Public Relations (PR), nearly completed Advertising, and am now excited for the final leg of my journey with Medical Communications.
Before heading into my first rotation with the PR team, I had limited knowledge of the world of PR. I imagined I would be talking to a lot of journalists, but it was so much more than that!
I was given real responsibility from day 1 and gained hands-on experience of account handling within the PR setting, including client liaison, project management and campaign material development.
The work was so varied, across several therapy areas, from executing a disease awareness social media campaign to supporting the roll out of a virtual reality press room. At the same time learning the key components of a successful PR campaign and understanding how both traditional and social media can be harnessed to advocate product or brand value.
This helped me to gain invaluable insight into the industry.
Outside of the day to day work, there were also lots of team socials, including salsa dancing, team drinks and weekly quizzes. The PR team love to let their hair down!
I transferred to the advertising team in March. Although I was sad goodbye to my first OPEN Health family, I was excited to experience a new challenge.
Within the advertising team I have had the pleasure of working alongside designers, creatives, science writers, and strategists to create innovative healthcare campaigns for our pharmaceutical clients.
Currently, I am working on an exciting product launch which is providing me with hands-on exposure to the creative process, from conception of an idea to realisation of an engaging campaign including promotional videos, print materials and patient engagement tactics. The social activities in the advertising team certainly rival those of PR. Most recently we had a team day out to Tate Britain, followed by an afternoon of axe throwing.
Looking ahead to September, I will rotate into my final placement with the Medical Communications team, another exciting area within OPEN Health. The graduate scheme has opened so many more doors than I thought it would; I’ve developed my skill set, made friends and nurtured relationships with clients. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a collaborative, creative, and exciting environment, where no two days are ever the same!
